The useful picture should not be this hard to see.
New Zealand has valuable public company information. The problem is the work required to turn separate records into a coherent answer. Legible was built to close that gap.
Why Legible exists
It started with a question about overlooked data.
The first notes for Legible were written in a café, while founder Clem White was exploring a practical question: which public datasets in New Zealand hold more value than their current interfaces allow people to reach?
Company data stood out. The records exist, but the useful picture is spread across separate registers and websites. A researcher has to find the right records, work out how the people and entities connect, and keep enough source information to explain the result later.
Looking at the work done by accountants, lawyers, credit teams and insolvency practitioners made the opportunity clearer. These are time-pressed professionals who need reliable answers, but too much of the process still consists of moving between portals and rebuilding the same picture by hand.
Legible grew from that observation: one place to research a company, follow its people and relationships, and see the underlying records with their dates and sources intact.

Clem has spent 25 years building enterprise applications for the UK private health insurance sector. Those systems serve time-stretched professionals and operate under serious demands for data integrity, privacy and compliance.
That work calls for more than technical expertise. It develops engineering judgement and operational accountability: knowing that the details have to be right, that sensitive information must be handled carefully, and that software has to keep working when people depend on it.
Legible brings the same discipline to public-register data. The product and its data platform are built around clear provenance, careful handling of information, and operational practices that customers can inspect rather than take on trust.

Small by design. Accountable by default.
Legible is operated by Glint Limited, a privately held, New Zealand-owned company. Being small means the person responsible for the product is close to the data, the infrastructure and the people using it.
- Official access
- Register data is accessed under agreement with MBIE and the Companies Office, not collected by scraping their websites.
- Responsible infrastructure
- Our infrastructure provider is ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certified and engaged under a GDPR Article 28 processing agreement.
- Recovery tested
- Off-site backups are encrypted before they leave our infrastructure, and the documented restore process has been exercised.
- Privacy responsibility
- Glint Limited has a named privacy officer, documented incident and breach-response processes, and a dedicated privacy contact.
